IHSS In-Class/HW: Prisoner of the Infidels

Pick a section to note the style of his writing.  How would you characterize it?  On the first page at the end of the page, Osman says "Kill me if you wish. Or take me away from here. It's all the same to me." I would characterize this piece of writing as sad, or hopeless. He makes it sound like he could care less about what happens to him because life is awful and it really isn't worth living. After all, being a slave and being beaten every day, everyone would have a breaking point. In this part of the story, we see that Osman had reached his breaking point.

What role does his religion play in his thinking?  Give an example. It is no easy task to keep up with one's self when presented with such an opportunity. But the almighty exalted be his name in his grace and goodness created me bashful, such that I let thousands of opportunities slip by. In this text, we can see that Osman is arguing with himself and his religion. Osman lets hundreds of perfect opportunities to sleep with these two young beautiful women slip by because his religion forbids him to. Eventually, Osman loses control over the ability to reason with his religious side and sleeps with the two women.

What is a decision that he had to make?  Do you think it was a good one? Why or why not? I came across the blacksmith and his family they were making charcoal, and approach them to beg for some bread. I don't think this was a good idea. We know that Osman is a runaway slave and if he gets caught at any moment that he would be taken back as a slave. Despite knowing this he goes up to a blacksmith. and begs for bread. We know that he was hungry but it still should not have been worth it. To top this off as well he stays the night at their house after eating their bread. He eventually gets captured and is now a slave again.

How does Osman's experience help us understand history?  Why is his experience important? Osman's experience helps us better understand history because it is direct writing from Osman. Osman writes this book with great detail and explains to us the journey in which he took and brought us. He also shows us what it was like to be a war prisoner of the time and or a slave and how it affected him.
