Economic Availability of Alcohol and Alcoholism Incidence Rates in Russia - Cultural Anthropology Blog
One of the biggest issues currently in russia is the Alcoholic rates, due to the mass popularity of vodka. The study I chose to read is one about comparing the availability (affordability) of vodka in Russia to the alcoholic rates in russia. The paper starts out explaining a little about how the Russian government has tried to alter the alcoholic rates in Russia by increasing taxes on vodka, but nothing that they did was able to greatly decrease the number of alcoholics. This study starts out by looking at the amount of alcoholics compared to the availability of vodka since 1992, and it gives a really interesting point: The average salary in russia since 1992 was able to purchase about 12 liters of vodka, but in 2011, that number had jumped to 91.2, a huge increase. Here is a graph of what they found:
The final findings of the study show that the alcoholic rates have been increasing steadily since 1999, but the availability of vodka has been decreasing steadily since 2003, presumably the Russian government’s response to vodka abuse. This means that the two values are actually inverse, which is a strange result. This means that, even as vodka keeps getting more and more expensive, alcoholics are still consuming it, and at even larger rates than ever before. The study finishes with the statement that it is very possible that the alcoholic rates and vodka prices reported from Russia may not be entirely accurate, and that is a possibility for the strange result.
I think this is interesting because you would think if something was more expensive, people would stop buying it, and this would mean less alcoholics, but apparently people don’t care, they will muster up the money no matter the price.
