Firescapes, Smoke and Woe blogger entry
The article I read was about the huge wildfires that have been affecting our ecosystem and the people in it. These big wildfires, often known as firescapes, are being caused mostly by climate change. The climate is heating up which is drying out the areas like the California Mendocino area and in places like Jambi Province and Sumatra. Sumatra and Jambi Province are home to plantations of oil palms and timber around the tropical rainforests there. In California, grape and marijuana plantations are up in flames.
These fires are very bad for the environment and humans for two reasons. The first reason is people who live around or in the forests are being displaced because they are at threat of dying from the fires. People are being forced to leave their homes because the places they live are no longer safe. Around 31 people died in the 2020 Mendocino fires in California. The other big reason is the smoke that is emitted from the fires. The smoke spreads through the areas and people die from inhaling too much of it. In 2015 there were an estimated 100,000 premature deaths from smoke in the Sumatra fires.
I don't exactly know how to help. I think a huge part of the first is climate change drying out the atmosphere which is causing plant life to become more flammable. If the world put out more effort into using less gas and lowering your carbon emissions that would probably help a lot. If we just stop try to stop using air pollutants and reduce our or usage and reduce the manufacture of plastic we make it could really help. Overall I think the fires are devastating and thinking about all the people who died from the fires themselves and from the smoke afterward is heartbreaking.
