Linguistics as a Profession
Academia is a conventional path for linguists. The people that choose this path devote themselves to the science of linguistics and after a lot of training they become professors. There are other parts to linguistics as well, there is a computational aspect of linguistics as well. In that area of linguistics the linguists work in the computer industry on issues of speech recognition, speech synthesis, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, or computer-mediated language learning. Some linguists work in the government where much skill is needed. The linguists in the government conduct research, provide language-related technological services, and contribute important insight on issues of law, policy, and education. Linguists have a strong understanding of the mechanics of languages. So that allows them an advantage to teach other languages. Although they can be teachers they can be other things as well regarding teaching a language. Such as developing educational materials, training language teachers, developing standardized testing materials, and finding means to assess acquisition and more effectively teach language. Other linguists work to preserve other languages and conduct field research to do so. Linguistics have many aspects and they are also highly rewarding.
