IHSS HW: Linguistics Blog and Seminar


Vol. 33 No. 2 (2018) is the blog that I read. The blog focuses on the cultural anthropology of indigenous media and the possibilities it has over political and social networks today. The cultural anthropology post talks about how different people in the study of cultural anthropology write on different topics in different countries and places. One example from this blog was Jason Cons. Jason Cons wrote a book on the seriousness of climate security on global governance in specific places like Bangladesh. Another book by Bettina Stoetzer connects nonhuman relations to race, and social justice in her essay. Her essay explores the urban environment of Berlin. She has also made a case for ruderal analytic as her way of capturing the ecology of unexpected neighbors in the city. And the last person mentioned in the blog was Laurie Denyer. Laurie Denyer talks about repurposed waste becoming a divine fragrance in urban Brazil. Another large topic he discusses is optimism of grace and the cruelties of race and poverty. He says this topic isn’t talked about enough.

It was called the Life Home Insurance building, it was only 10 stories tall and  was completely supported by a steel frame. From here, skyscrapers only started to get taller and more sophisticated. As technology improved, stronger frames could be built, resulting in taller skyscrapers. These massive towers were becoming more popular not just for their conservative use of horizontal space, but for their status. As cities were becoming more urbanized, space was becoming less and less of a resource. Because of this, builders started taking to building vertically to adapt to the denser areas. With the growing urban population, real estate prices started to increase, making skyscrapers more desirable as they could pack a lot more people in for a lot less space. Native American Reading Response - Wyatt

 Wyatt Quillin Mr. Roddy IHSS 14 October 2021 Reading Response     The Native American readings, including the creation story of the Iroquois and Samson Occum's sermon were very interesting to read and observe how other cultures and religions affected them. The Iroquois creation story was fascinating because it was probably documented by a Christian, and there were some parts of the story that were strangely similar to the Christian creation story. For example, a part in the story talked about two beings that were created "in his image" and he "breathed life into their nostrils". This is something that occurs in Genesis in the Bible. Another reading that I found very interesting was the sermon Samson Occum gave before the hanging of a Native American man. Samson Occum was a Native American pastor, which means that he assimilated into the Christian religion which originally came from Europe. Diary of a napoleonic foot soldier

 Baker Croyle  Mr Roddy  IHSS  November 1 2021  1. He definitely wrote this like a traditional diary and I like how it written because it is easy to read. It also recaps the series of events that happened very well because they were probably written directly after or when the even was happening. 2. One of the worries that he had was losing his horse. Many of the men were starving and the horses could have been a good source of food. You can see that he is worried because he ties himself to the horse every time he goes to bed. 3. ears from a dog, fire on page 75. It talks about how he was hungry and he had to eat animals like dog and horse. They would actually cut off meat from a horse that had fallen down even if was still alive.  4. We see camaraderie throughout the story in the sense that they all tried to take care of each other and make sure they were fed and rested. they would take turns by the fire and sleeping. they also shared most of their food and...
