IHSS Ethnographer Blog: In-class

There was recently an island discovered off the coast of Spain. I had to explore it. When we get to the island there are signs of life. A man-made dock is where we stopped our boat. As we venture deeper into the island there is a thick forest that we have to venture through. At about halfway from the center of the island we can see smoke in the air from where we were venturing to. I can't tell if I'm excited at the fact that we may find people, or scared that they might hurt us. We go faster to the center of the island. We are within 30 feet of the smoke. The crew slows down getting scared of what lies ahead. I take the first steps to what we may find. As I walk through the jungle and into the open plain in the jungle there are small huts. about 8 of them. There is a small campfire that sits in the middle of it all. The crew never followed with me. Three men approach me with clothing only covering certain parts. They point spears at me and yell at me in their language that I can't understand. More and more people start to surround me. I can't understand what they're saying. Eventually, the men pick me up by my arms and take me to one of their huts. I lay there as a woman sits down next to me and speaks to me. I try to talk to her but we can't understand each other. For about an hour the woman tries to speak with e but no progress is made. She then gets up and leaves. I follow her out of the hut and the people have gathered around the campfire. They have a pig strung up above the campfire. it was the time they ate dinner. I assume they motioned for me to come to eat with them. I walk over cautiously looking for my crew at the same time. They were nowhere to be seen. Did they leave or did the people take them somewhere like me?  They take the pig from the fire and begin to eat. I sit there and watch what they do. The lady from before comes to me with a piece of pig. I take the pig and eat it. I was too hungry not to. The pig tasted good so I finished and kept quiet even though I wanted more. I didn't want to make a mistake with these people. When all the pig was gone instead of the woman taking me anywhere, a man had picked me up and taken me to another hut. The man spoke again but I couldn't understand. He laid down and I assume he wanted me to do the same. From morning to night I woke up waited for the lady to come. She spoke to me for an hour then showed me around the village. The people would try to speak to me as I walked by but nothing would come to me. The woman then would have my fish with the men out by the dock. I did this for a couple of hours until it was near night this was when we huddled by the campfire and ate the pig. Then we all went to sleep. This was the way it went for over 2 weeks. By then I was able to speak there language a little bit. The woman taght me most of it. The peoplr don't have a lot of words in their language. It's what makes it easy to understand. The peoples maine source of food it pig, fish, and vegetables of the island. I learned a lot of their culture. They don'y beilive in any type of gods. They just beilive that all life comes from their island. They allowed me to get off of the island when my crew came. They had left me. I told them goodbye and left the island.
