IHSS HW: Cultural Anthropology Blog


    The introduction to firestorms talks about the many annual firestorms in places such as Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, The United States, and even more. The intro states that this is a clear sign that forests are dying out and how this could be a worldwide issue. The intro then proceeds to talk about deforestation and how large achers of forest are cut every day to make conveniences for people, or to make plantations. It also talks about how we strip the earth clean of materials from the inside. The last thing the intro mentions is that there are forests that humans touch and don't touch that seem to thrive. Or how from a scorched earth new life grows. A firestorm occurs when a fire grows strong enough that it is able to create its own winds.  Humans are what contribute to making such winds, but the problem is that we cant' control them. synergies of power, economy, technology, and ecology create socio-ecological firestorms. Humans are basically deciding which forests live and die. The message the blog is trying to get out is that Humans need to take a pause on industrialization and start taking care of forests and the earth.

This something can be anything from a pair of shoes to a dance move to a hairstyle, and there are a couple of variables that are necessary to the success of the something. According to Malcolm Gladwell, the writer of the book The Tipping Point , the three components that determine whether something will reach its tipping point are the law of the few, the stickiness factor, and the power of context. The law of the few relies on the select people who are able to use their special social traits to help spread information and influence. Sociology Reading Blog (The Culture of Fear)

 Ethan Zweig Mr. Roddy IHSS September 27, 2021 "The Culture of Fear"     "The Culture of Fear" was written in 1999 by Barry Glassner, who was a sociology professor at USC. The book explains who Americans are so engrossed with "fear of wrong things". Glassner examines and exposes the people who manipulate Americans perceptions profit from the often baseless anxieties they cultivate and encourage. Three out of four Americans say they feel more more fearful than they did a decade ago. Culture of fear is the concept that people incite fear in the general public to achieve political or workplace goals through emotional bias. Barry Glassner found out that no amount of debunking can wipeout fear.
