Native American History Readings
A big theme I can see with both the Iroquois creation story, and other similar written stories, is that the writer, someone who is most likely a white Christian, writes these stories through a Christian lense that tries to match creation stories like the Iroquois one, with the Christian creation story one. I wonder if these Christian writers are even doing this on purpose, or if they are just unconsciously heavily influenced by their religion. I do not think these writers that translated these works were influenced by their religion but rather by the society that they live in. If we look at authors and writers today, regardless of their religion, most write through a lens of their own society instead of a lens of their religion. Something that this also makes interesting is that these religions also have or had a big impact in our society. I would say 200-400 years ago religion, Christianity, was very influential in the Western world. It would have a huge impact on society, compared to now, Christianity no longer holds the grip it used to have over the western world. So while these writings were mostly written when Christianity was starting to lose its huge influence, you could and can still see the connections that the author wrote because of its influence. As a result they write all of these papers with clear influence in their respective cultures. As well as right with their own morals, for example, one culture can see cannibalism as something of honor or acceptable while the person from another culture writing about this group sees cannibalism as something abhorrent and as such will write about the culture as an inferior one to their own.
