 Skyscrapers

The earliest times of skyscrapers occurred in Chicago and New York between 1884 and 1945.Cities in the United States always had low rise building until economic growth due to the civil war. In the beginning skyscrapers were only occupied by male workers but this changed when female office workers became more popular in the 1890s.  Skyscrapers started to become popular due to the limited space of buildings being wide. With skyscrapers they can use a short amount of space considering width and a very large amount of space considering height. In the 1880s and 1890s there was the American technological revolution which contributed to helping architects build higher buildings. Due to the large amount of office jobs in the world led to a high demand of office space which led to more skyscrapers being built. Changed in urban life including street trams, subways, and elevated rail links contributed to building taller, higher density buildings.  Skyscrapers has effected public transportation because it has given a singular location where hundreds of workers all go. The increase in number of skyscrapers was heavily relied on the increase in number of office workers. The increase in office supplies also affected the increase in skyscrapers. The more office supplies including the typewriter, the adding machine, the telephone, and filing cabinets all added to the demand of more space which led to more skyscraper being built. Skyscrapers faced a lot of criticism. People viewed skyscrapers as "giants of the mere market" or "mercenary monsters". Skyscrapers have played a critical role in the development of urbanization.
